DISC HERNIATION

DISC HERNIATION

Overview:

1. Indications for Surgery:

  • Surgery is considered when conservative treatments, such as rest, physical therapy, and medications, fail to provide relief from symptoms like pain, numbness, or weakness.
  • Severe or persistent neurological symptoms, such as difficulty walking or loss of bladder or bowel control, may also warrant surgical intervention.

2. Surgical Approaches:

  • Microdiscectomy: This is a minimally invasive approach that involves a small incision and the use of a microscope or magnifying lenses to visualize and remove the herniated disc material. The goal is to relieve pressure on the nerves.
  • Endoscopic Discectomy: In some cases, an endoscope may be used to perform the discectomy. This minimally invasive technique involves smaller incisions and the use of a thin, flexible tube with a camera to guide the surgeon.

3. Procedure:

  • The surgeon makes a small incision over the affected disc.
  • The muscles are gently moved aside, and a retractor may be used to create a pathway to the spine.
  • Using surgical instruments or an endoscope, the surgeon removes the herniated disc material that is causing compression on nerves.
  • The incision is closed, and the muscles are allowed to return to their normal position.

4. Advantages:

  • Pain Relief: The primary goal is to alleviate pain and other symptoms associated with nerve compression.
  • Minimally Invasive: Microdiscectomy and endoscopic discectomy are minimally invasive procedures, resulting in less tissue damage, reduced recovery times, and shorter hospital stays compared to traditional open surgery.

5. Recovery:

  • Patients are typically encouraged to start moving and walking soon after surgery.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended to aid in rehabilitation and prevent future issues.
  • Full recovery varies but is generally faster compared to open surgery.

6. Risks:

  • While considered safe, all surgeries carry some risks. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, nerve injury, or recurrence of disc herniation.
