Overview:

Spinal fractures may necessitate surgical intervention when conservative treatments prove ineffective. Indicators include persistent pain, limited mobility, or neurological symptoms.

1. Surgical Approaches:

  • Vertebroplasty: A minimally invasive procedure involving the injection of bone cement into the fractured vertebra to stabilize and relieve pain.
  • Kyphoplasty: Similar to vertebroplasty, but includes the inflation of a balloon before cement injection to restore vertebral height.

2. Procedure:

  • Surgeon accesses the fractured vertebra through a small incision.
  • For vertebroplasty, bone cement is injected. For kyphoplasty, a balloon is first inflated, followed by cement injection.
  • Stabilizing the fractured vertebra helps alleviate pain and restore vertebral height.

3. Advantages:

  • Pain Relief: Primary focus on alleviating pain associated with fractures.
  • Minimally Invasive: Both vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are minimally invasive procedures, reducing tissue damage and expediting recovery.

4. Recovery:

  • Patients are typically encouraged to resume normal activities gradually.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended to enhance mobility and prevent complications.
  • Recovery times vary but are generally shorter compared to traditional open surgery.

5. Risks:

  • While generally safe, potential risks include infection, bleeding, nerve injury, or recurrent fractures.
